Types of asbestos

Asbestos falls into two broad categories, friable and non-friable.

Non-friable asbestos:

Solid or rigid asbestos that is reinforced with a bonding agent. Non-friable asbestos is less likely to become airborne in measurable amounts and therefore considered safer. In quantities less than 10sqm, non-friable asbestos can be removed by any person, so long as it is taken immediately to an EPA depot registered for safe asbestos disposal. This is a legal requirement. Above this amount, it is far better and more cost effective to contract a Class B licenced asbestos remover such as Randall Group Inverell to do this for you.

Friable asbestos:

Loose, crumbly asbestos that does become airborne in measurable quantities. Friable asbestos is not considered safe in any circumstances and should always be dealt with by a licenced professional. Friable asbestos requires a Class A asbestos removal licence and must always have a Supervisor and air monitoring present onsite to carry out the removal. While Randall Group does not currently hold a Class A licence, we can arrange for this work to be carried out for you.

When to call a professional

Removing asbestos has the potential to put your health and those around you at risk. It is currently legal to remove up to 10sqm of asbestos privately. Above this amount, Work Health and Safety laws require you to employ licenced professionals to deal with the asbestos for you. Due to the health risks, Randall Group strongly recommends that any amount of asbestos should be removed by a licenced professional.
